Weder August von Siccardsburg noch Eduard van der Nüll erleben die Eröffnung des Hofoperntheaters am 25.5.1869 mit Mozarts Don Giovanni (Don Juan). Während Eduard die Kritik an seinem Pionierbau im Ringstraßenstil in den Selbstmord treibt, stirbt sein Freund August kurz darauf an den Folgen eines Schlaganfalls.
Am 12.3.1945 wird die Oper durch einen Bombenangriff zerstört. Nach 10 jährigem Wiederaufbau unter Verwendung sowjetischer Finanzmittel wird das Haus mit Beethovens Fidelio am 5.11.1955 feierlich eröffnet. 30.000 Besucher verfolgen über Lautsprecher am Ring die Aufführung.
Heute zählt sie neben der Mailänder Scala und der Metropolitan Opera zu den schönsten und wichtigsten Spielstätten der Welt.
